A Rule I Try To Live By
I made a decision that I am to be treated well.
It sounds simple, but it has changed a lot for me.
I used to spend a lot of time around people who drained my energy. I would try to understand them, accommodate them, explain myself, or somehow make things work.
And sometimes I still do.
But now I notice much faster when something doesn't feel good to me.
I can ask myself:
Do I want to be around this person?
Do I like how I feel when I am with them?
Do I feel more like myself, or less?
And then I get to make a choice.
I don't have to wait until someone has done something terrible to decide that I don't want them in my life.
I don't need a courtroom case.
I can simply decide that I want to be treated well.
And that also means treating myself well.
Taking my own needs seriously.
Listening to myself.
Not abandoning myself just because someone else might be disappointed.
I think this is part of taking your power back.
You get to decide what you allow into your life.
You get to decide who gets access to you.
And you get to decide how you want to be treated.
