Your Life Doesn’t Have to Be a Straight Line
I used to think life was supposed to be more like a straight line.
You have a goal.
You make a plan.
You move towards it.
And when you find yourself somewhere you didn’t plan to be, you might think you’ve gone wrong.
But what if your life is more like a river?
A river doesn’t move in a straight line. It bends. It changes direction. Sometimes it splits into side streams. Sometimes it slows down and becomes almost still. Sometimes it finds itself in a swamp.
And none of that means the river is doing it wrong.
Maybe your life doesn’t have to follow the plan you made five years ago.
Maybe changing direction isn’t failure.
Maybe the relationship that ended, the job you left, the idea you suddenly became obsessed with, or the thing you thought you wanted but no longer want is simply part of the river.
I find this comforting.
Because I can get very attached to knowing where I’m going.
I like having a plan. I like understanding things. I like knowing what comes next.
But life doesn’t work that way.
Sometimes you know.
Sometimes you don’t.
Sometimes the next step makes perfect sense.
Sometimes you have to take it without knowing where it will lead.
And sometimes you have to stop swimming so hard and notice where the water is actually taking you.
I don’t think surrender means giving up on what you want.
I think it means staying open to the possibility that the way there might look different than you imagined.
Your life doesn’t have to be a straight line.
It can be a spiral.
It can bend. It can expand. It can surprise you.
And you are allowed to follow what feels alive, even when you don’t yet understand where it is taking you.
