Practicing the Pleasure of Smell

I love smell.

There is something about it that can bring me into the present moment immediately.

A flower.
Fresh coffee.
The smell of rain.
Someone’s skin.

Sometimes I stop and actually smell things instead of just noticing them in passing.

I might take a deep breath and stay with the sensation for a few seconds.

It sounds simple.

And it is.

But I find that when I give myself permission to really experience something pleasurable, I become more present.

I am not thinking about what happened yesterday or what I have to do tomorrow.

I am just here.

Smelling.

Feeling.

Experiencing.

And I think this is one of the easiest ways to bring more pleasure into everyday life.

You don't need to wait for something special.

There is so much to experience when you actually pay attention.

So next time you smell something you like, pause.

Take a breath.

And really smell it.
