You were never meant to just function, but to feel ALIVE

I think being able to function in life is very important.

I think it is important to be productive, actually get things done and move towards and create the life that you want.

But I also think there is a point where functioning can take over your whole life.

Functioning can look like optimizing your habits so you can get things done more efficiently and faster.

It can look like working through a to-do list that you didn't consciously create. You just wrote down all the fires that you have to work on, all the things that have to be done.

It can look like having your shit together and trying to control every piece of your life, because you know from experience that when something doesn't go to plan, your whole routine suffers.

Your kids get sick.

You need to repair your bike.

Something unexpected happens.

And suddenly you feel like, “Oh my God, this is just on top of everything else.”

Your day was already fully packed.

You have almost no free time for yourself and no breathing room.

And this doesn't just happen for one or two days, but this becomes your normal.

Your life is very full and you have accumulated more and more things to do without really stopping and deliberately choosing what is actually allowed to be in your schedule.

Which tasks do you actually want to do because they bring you further towards creating the life you want?

And which tasks just ended up on your plate and could be done by somebody else, at a different time, or maybe not at all?

When you are in this mode, you don't take the time to step back and look at your life from a different perspective.

You tell yourself that you don't have the time for that.

And this costs you a lot.

It costs you peace of mind, contentment, calmness and those moments where you can just be yourself and feel yourself.

Your relationships can suffer because you are always on edge and always jumping from one task to the next.

You have a harder time being present with another person, or even making time for the people in your life you really want to spend time with.

And your joy and pleasure suffer too.

When there are always things that have to be done, taking time for yourself and doing nothing can feel like a waste of time.

You could be working on your to-do list.

You tell yourself that tomorrow might be a bit more relaxed, but then tomorrow just fills up like today.

And you miss the times when you were spontaneous.

A friend asks you to spontaneously go to a concert and you don't have the capacity or the energy to do it.

And if you happen to have an evening for yourself, you don't necessarily know what to do with it.

You crash on the couch because you are exhausted and try to calm down.

And then you find yourself on social media or watching a series on TV.

And the evening is gone.

And you feel like you haven't actually done anything that brought you joy or pleasure.

You don't have the space.

You don't have the capacity.

You don't have the calmness.

And you can feel stressed because you don't have enough time even when you actually have an hour.

You miss the small pleasures in life because you jump from one task to the next, and even taking one minute to enjoy the view out of your window can feel like time you don't have.

I know this because I have done this myself.

In 2015 - 2018, I was very busy working in the lab on my project and paper.

I basically worked 10 hours a day and had almost no weekend for myself because I had to go to the cell culture.

I remember that I was even negotiating with myself about whether I should go to the coffee corner, which was on the same floor, and have a glass of water.

Or should I rather do the mini prep first and only have the glass of water while my agarose gel was running?

I was confused when colleagues asked me to meet for coffee in the afternoon and told me that they went for coffee every afternoon.

And I was thinking, how can they even find time for these 15 minutes every day to just sit and chill and talk?

I didn't really find the time.

I was always so stressed and running, literally running to the FACS facility, that I didn't stop and chat with a colleague when I met them in the corridor and ask them how their project was going.

I was always on the run.

And at the same time, I was still doing martial arts, something I had been doing for 20 years.

I remember negotiating with myself about whether I should leave at six o'clock once a week to go to training.

And I knew that martial arts was something that could really calm me down.

It brought my focus to the here and now. It made me focus on my body and the sensations in my body.

It was actually a beautiful counterpoint to the scientific work I was doing.

But even then, I had to negotiate with myself about whether I was allowed to take the time for it.

And underneath all of this was something else.

I wanted to show that I was good at my job.

I always had this need to prove myself.

I thought this was normal. I thought this was how it was supposed to go if you wanted to be successful in science.

And at some point I noticed that this wasn't sustainable.

I couldn't do it anymore.

I wanted a normal life.

A life that wasn't dominated by my work, where my work had priority and dictated my calendar.

Where my work decided which weekends I could visit my parents and which evenings I could leave at five and meet a friend.

I wanted more balance in my life.

I didn't want to feel the pressure of having to deliver for years on end with no break.

Because it felt like every success was just a stepping stone and the starting point of more work.

More work and more work.

There was no downtime for me.

And I didn't want a life where I had to give 150 percent all the time for years and years.

What I do differently now is actually quite simple.

I deliberately take 20 minutes during the day for meditation.

Sometimes it is after lunch, when I would otherwise sit around feeling sluggish and low on energy and unable to focus.

I do a short self-hypnosis or meditation and deliberately take the time to recharge my batteries.

Then I can come back refreshed and work with full focus again.

I can work faster and with more precision than if I had forced myself to keep reading the email and thinking when I didn't have the energy anymore.

I have learned to work more dynamically with the ebbs and flows of my energy.

When my energy is low, I allow myself to go with that ebb.

I reduce my thinking and go into feeling my body and being in the present moment.

And afterwards I often have more focus.

For me, this is also what discipline means.

Of course discipline can mean getting things done.

But discipline can also mean sticking to the breaks you have scheduled instead of trying to work through them.

It can mean deciding that you will give yourself one week to fully work on your manuscript, and then not immediately scheduling another time-intensive experiment afterwards.

You can deliberately celebrate what you achieved and give yourself half a day, or even a day, to catch up with everything else you didn't tend to.

And I think we need to define success for ourselves.

Maybe success is climbing the career ladder and having the job title that impresses your study buddies, your friends from university or your family.

But maybe success for you is having a decent job in science and also having time for your hobbies.

Maybe you want to go climbing.

Maybe you want to hike in the mountains in Norway.

Maybe you want to have dinner with your friends on a Wednesday evening.

Maybe you want to be able to take a whole Sunday off without feeling guilty about it.

I think it is worth asking yourself what success actually means to you.

Because I think a lot of people are trying to get something through all this functioning.

They want to feel that they deserve their job.

They want to feel good about themselves because they gave everything.

And often there are values underneath this.

You have to work hard in order to be paid.

You have to show that you are serious about your job.

If you don't give everything, maybe you are not worthy of it.

And you want to feel good about yourself.

You want to be happy in the end.

But sometimes the way you are behaving to get there is actually blocking you from experiencing the very thing you want.

And maybe the question isn't how can I become even better at managing everything?

Maybe it is worth taking a step back and asking:

What am I actually spending my time on?

Is this helping me create the life I want?

And what would happen if I allowed myself to stop functioning for a moment and actually live?

I don't believe in chasing happiness. I believe in creating joy.

When we talk about happiness, we often talk about getting our circumstances right.

Finding the right job. Having the right relationship. Going on holiday. Having enough money. Having people around us who treat us well.

And of course, all of these things influence how we feel. Our environment matters. The people around us matter. Our circumstances matter.

I am not saying that they don't.

I also think it makes sense to change things in your life that don't work for you. It makes sense to talk to your partner about certain behaviours and ask for what you want. It makes sense to create an environment that supports you.

But I don't want to wait until everything outside of me is right before I allow myself to be happy.

Because when I do that, I give my circumstances a lot of power over my inner state.

I am basically saying: I will be happy when this changes. I will feel good when this person behaves differently. I will be joyful when my life looks a certain way.

And this is what I mean when I talk about chasing happiness.

You are looking for something outside of you that will finally give you the feeling you want to have.

What I am much more interested in is creating joy.

And for me, creating joy means building my capacity to experience joy.

I have become much more aware of what joy actually feels like in my body.

For me, it is an expansion in my chest. I feel an uplifting sensation, almost like I am getting bigger around my chest and my head.

And when I notice that I am feeling joyful because of something that is happening around me, I can catch it.

I can notice, oh, I am getting joyful right now.

And then I can deliberately choose to stay with it.

I can feel the sensation.

I can allow it to become bigger.

I can allow it to become more intense.

And this is actually a practice.

Because we are often not very used to feeling a lot of joy for a longer period of time.

Maybe you see a friend and you feel really happy to see them. You feel the joy, and then you move on with your day.

Or something really beautiful happens and you enjoy it for a moment, but then you are already thinking about the next thing.

And I find it interesting that we can really want joy, we can chase joy, we can think that we would be so much happier if we had more joy in our lives, and then when the sensation of joy actually becomes very intense, it can feel uncomfortable.

Thoughts can come up like:

Maybe I don't deserve this.
Something bad is going to happen.
This is too good.
The higher you go, the further you fall.

And suddenly you are not really experiencing the joy anymore. You are already worrying about losing it.

You are somewhere in the future, thinking about what might happen next.

And I think this is where building capacity for joy becomes really interesting.

You can learn to be with the sensation of joy, even when it is intense.

You can get more familiar with it.

You can make it more normal for yourself to feel really, really good.

One of the places where I notice this very strongly is at concerts.

I love going to live concerts, especially open-air concerts.

I love being in the crowd and feeling the energy of the crowd and the energy of the band. Everybody is there, dancing and singing along, and there is this feeling of being with so many other people and being completely in the experience.

It brings up a lot of joy for me.

And I used to be much more self-conscious about that.

I would look around and notice that maybe the people around me weren't as excited about the music as I was.

And then I would become aware of myself dancing and being in my own world and maybe feeling like I was having too much joy.

So I would check what other people were doing and adjust my own level of joy and expressiveness to what I was seeing around me.

Over the last few years, this has changed for me.

I have practiced feeling my joy.

I have become much more aware of what is happening in my body when I feel joyful, and I have become much more comfortable with the sensations.

And I also started to prioritise joy because these moments are precious to me.

Sometimes when I am at a concert and I am dancing and listening to the music, I get into this kind of trance, almost a meditative state.

I am experiencing myself in a way that is very different from my normal day-to-day consciousness.

And I am curious about that.

I want to explore where this can take me and what it is like to experience myself in ways that I haven't experienced before, or maybe to go deeper into something I have already experienced.

So now I don't want to leave that state after one song.

I want to stay there for a few songs.

I want to allow myself to really go into it.

And I don't want to make my joy smaller because somebody around me isn't expressing the same amount of joy.

I want to experience my joy.

I think this is part of creating joy.

Not only creating the circumstances that make joy more likely, but also becoming more capable of receiving it when it is there.

And this doesn't mean that I don't plan for things to go wrong.

I can absolutely think ahead and ask myself what I will do if something doesn't work out as planned.

But there is a difference between planning for adversity and worrying about feeling bad again.

Planning can be useful.

Worrying about when the joy will disappear takes me out of the joy that is actually happening right now.

And this is why I don't want to spend my life chasing happiness and waiting for the outside world to finally give me the feeling I want.

I want to build my capacity for joy.

I want to recognise it when it is there.

I want to allow myself to feel it.

And I want to become more and more comfortable with feeling a lot of it.

Maria

If you want support in creating more joy and aliveness in your life and building your capacity to actually experience it, send me a message. Then we can see if we want to work together.

We like to believe that we are in charge of our lives.

And in many ways we are.

But then you look a little closer.

How many of your thoughts are actually yours?

Some came from your mother.
Some from your father.
Some from teachers.
Some from partners.
Some from society.
Some from whatever you were told was sensible, respectable, successful or normal.

We absorb these ideas and then quietly build our lives inside them.

So I have become interested in one very simple question:

What if this thought isn’t true?

Not:

“Is this thought positive?”

Not:

“How can I replace this thought with a better one?”

Just:

What if it isn’t true?

What if you aren’t too old?

What if you’re not actually bad at this?

What if you don’t need everybody to approve?

What if you don’t need to know the entire path before taking the first step?

What if the thing you’ve been calling unrealistic is simply something you haven’t tried yet?

I’m not asking you to replace every thought with an optimistic one.

I’m much more interested in curiosity.

Because once you stop treating every thought as a fact, you have some room.

Room to question.

Room to experiment.

Room to notice what happens.

Room for another possibility.

I also like this question because it puts you back in the driver’s seat.

You don’t have to believe every thought your brain produces.

You can examine it.

You can challenge it.

You can even laugh at it.

And perhaps the most interesting question isn’t:

“What should I think instead?”

It’s:

“What if this thought isn’t true?”

I disagree with the basic premise.

You don't need to be fixed.

You are whole already, even when you don't see it yet.

Of course there are habits you might want to change.

There are things you might want to learn.

There are situations in your life that you don't enjoy and would very much like to change.

But that doesn't mean there is something fundamentally wrong with you.

I think trying to fix yourself can become the opposite of self-love.

Because underneath it sits the message:

“I am wrong as I am. I need to become different before I am okay.”

What if you stopped doing that?

What if you could love yourself while you're still figuring things out?

What if change didn't have to come from rejection of yourself?

That doesn't mean staying exactly as you are.

It means that change no longer has to be a fight against yourself.

There is not one right way to live.

There is your way.

How could anybody else know exactly what it is like to be you, what you desire, what you value and what wants to be expressed through your life?

Nobody can.

That is your work.

Not becoming the correct person.

Becoming more fully yourself.

There is a woman in Vienna who you’ll see squatting on the lawns of the Prater park, swaddling along with her view fixed upon the grass. She comes here regularly during spring time with a knife in her hand.

What is she doing?

I tell you. She is collecting intensity.

This woman is me and I strongly dislike green salad.

Nature gifts us with the most delicious and healthy plants and we take them and turn them into rather bleak tasting, but proper looking supermarket products. Why on earth does green salad exist? It carries no taste, it’s consistency is 95% boring and only pretends to be healthy.

That’s why I turn away from some weird looks and “Are you serious?” comments and turn towards the leaves of the dandelion. It’s the Ronja or Aragorn of salads – lives in the wilderness and has a strong character.

I prepare the leaves with warm potatoes, apple vinegar and the strongly flavored dark green oil of pumpkin seeds.

This is me saying: I don’t like watered down experiences. I like to have the full taste. I’m not interested in the pretense. I’m into the deep stuff.

My coaching isn’t about having a nice conversation. It’s not a green salad.

Coaching with me challenges you to go for the truth. An honesty that might be uncomfortable but is necessary for transformation.

I make sure that you feel safe to open up and be vulnerable, but my job is not to make you as comfortable as possible.

Growth doesn’t look like a glasshouse-grown tomato, but like the sturdy dandelion leaves that have grown in all weather and that eventually give rise to a rich flower that nourishes many insects around it.

If you want to experience the depths of your own true nature, I might be your coach. If you are interested in deep transformation, have at least one hour per day for yourself and are committed to taking responsibility for your happiness, comment below or reach out to me in private and we’ll have a conversation if we are a good fit.

You probably know the inner critical voice that tells you that you can’t possibly get this exciting new job or have the relationship that you dream of.

It always says the same thing, right?

“You aren’t good enough.
You aren’t worthy enough.
You aren’t enough.”

We all have a version of this inner critic.

It wants us to believe that it’s safer to play small and stay small.

And you believe this voice.

You choose to believe it.

How serious are you really about bringing your dreams alive?

A:
“It would be really nice to get this new job, but if I don’t get it, it’s not meant for me. And who am I to have a loving, reliable partner when there are so many relationships around me that fall apart?”

B:
“I am committed to giving my best to get this challenging and interesting job, and if I don’t, I’ll find an even better one. It’s in my power to create a healthy, loving relationship, and I will stay true to myself and love myself first.”

These thoughts don’t fall from the sky and, if you’re lucky, you stand on the right spot to receive those that support you.

YOU CHOOSE YOUR THOUGHTS YOURSELF!

It may be that your default thoughts used to be self-critical, but you can change that NOW.

You are in charge of your thoughts, and nobody can force you to think badly about yourself.

Stop blaming your boss, men, women, the world for your own disempowering thoughts.

Take a stand for yourself.

What I don’t mean is to mechanically repeat random affirmations that you found on the internet.

What I do mean are conscious thoughts that open your eyes to possibility.

I truly believe that you already have the power and freedom to create the life that YOU want.

How much you should work.
How relationships should look.
How successful you should be.
How much money you should make.
What a “good” life looks like.

And most of the time, we don’t even question it.

We compare ourselves to the people around us and use them as our reference point.

But what if your life doesn’t need to look normal?

What if you could create your own normal?

For me, this means asking myself:

What do I actually want?

Not what makes sense.

Not what other people are doing.

Not what I should want.

What do I want?

And then being willing to create a life around that.

This can feel uncomfortable because there is no blueprint.

You might want something that nobody around you wants.

You might make choices that other people don’t understand.

You might change your mind.

You might disappoint people.

And you might have to tolerate being seen as a little unconventional.

But you aren’t alive to live a copy of somebody else’s life.

You are here to create your own.

Your desires are allowed to be your reference point.

Your aliveness can be your compass.

So instead of asking:

“What is normal?”

“What would be normal for me?”

Maybe you don’t have a problem with making your desires happen.

Maybe the core of the matter lies deeper.

Maybe you don’t know what you want or desire.

This was the case for me, and I am not alone.

Women aren’t encouraged to find their wants, needs and desires.

Desire.

Do you hear the naughty, slightly “dirty” vibration this word carries?

Active desire is for men.
Passive desire is for women.

Men should desire and go for it.
Women should only be desired.

The more a woman is passively desired and the less she actively desires, the better.

So what can we do to relearn desire?

Notice – Trust – Value.

When I heard Betty Martin mention this internal process, I knew this is gold.

I know from my own experience that there is so much going on before I even speak my desire.

First, I need to notice it, which can be pretty difficult already.

Then I have to trust that this is a real desire of mine.

Thirdly, I need to value my desire.

This comes in various forms:

“Am I worthy of having this desire fulfilled?”

Or even:

“Should I have this desire, or does society, religion or my partner tell me that it is unimportant, sinful or crazy?”

Let us open our dusty boxes full of desires and peek in.

What is still alive?

What is ready to breathe fresh air?

What desire has been hammering against the lid for a long time and demands to be pursued?

What to do next?

Be still.

Open the chest of desires.

Notice what happens.

Relax.

Take one desire and notice, trust and value it the best you can.

Celebrate yourself!

You’ve just gone further than many people around you.

I celebrate you!

Do you want to share your desire with me or the world?

I love reading all the desires that finally see the light of day.

Much love,
Maria

I used to think life was supposed to be a straight line.

You make a plan.

You set a goal.

You work towards it.

And then, eventually, you arrive.

But life doesn’t really work that way.

There are detours.
Unexpected turns.
Things that don’t work out.
Things you thought you wanted that suddenly don’t feel right anymore.

And sometimes you have absolutely no idea where you are going.

I used to find that incredibly uncomfortable.

I wanted to know the next step. I wanted to understand how everything would fit together. I wanted a plan that made sense.

But the more I have learned to listen to myself, the more I have realised that I don’t need to know the whole path.

I just need to know the next step that feels alive.

It’s a bit like being on a river.

You don’t need to know every bend before you start moving.

You can pay attention to the current.

You can notice where the water is flowing.

You can change direction when something doesn’t feel right.

And you can trust that you will discover more of the river as you move.

This is very different from having no direction.

It means your direction comes from within rather than from a fixed blueprint of how your life is supposed to look.

You are allowed to change your mind.

You are allowed to want something different.

You are allowed to take a completely unexpected turn.

You are allowed to create a life that doesn’t look like anybody else’s.

You don’t have to have it all figured out.

You just have to be willing to listen to what feels alive now.

And then take the next step.
